Large Coil-Built Vase on the Pottery Wheel
Create a striking large ceramic vase in this inspiring 2-day workshop, where traditional coil-building meets the dynamic movement of the pottery wheel. During this workshop, you’ll discover how to build impressive forms with ease while giving shape to your own creative vision.
I will show you how to hand-roll your own coils, and an extruder will also be available to speed up the process.
You’ll begin by centering the amount of clay you’re comfortable with, creating the base and lower section of your vase using standard wheel-throwing techniques. From there, the magic begins: using large clay coils, you’ll gradually build height and volume directly on the wheel.
During the workshop, you will learn how to:
- Build large forms using wide coils with minimal effort
- Use body position, wheel rotation, and stability to work efficiently
- Dry the clay progressively to maintain and control the desired shape
- Create a tall, elegant vase without relying on physical strength
- Freely adapt the form to express your own style and ideas
This technique opens the door to creating larger, more sculptural pieces while keeping the process fluid, accessible, and highly creative.
